Ms. Walker - 7th Grade Standard and Enriched Language Arts
Welcome!
The goal of the 7th grade language arts class is to meet the unique needs of all 7th grade middle school students by offering a highly rigorous curriculum. The 7th grade language arts curriculum is aligned with the TN Ready Standards.
Supplies
Students should have the following supplies daily:
A fully charged iPad
Completed assignments
1 book
A variety of writing instruments (pencil, blue or black pen, red pen, highlighter)
ReadFit
ReadFit is the AMS reading program. Students have choice in what they read. Students are expected to always have a book with them. The agenda book has labeled pages to record book titles and plan what to read next. Students can use Destiny to suggest books to their friends, to make a list of future “reads,” to place holds on books currently checked out, and to access eBooks. Destiny can be accessed 24/7 from any internet connection ---your iPad, your computer, even your phone.
Formative Assessments
Formative assessments will be administered in individual classrooms to adapt the teaching to meet the learners’ needs. These assessments will be scored and will enable the learners to receive constructive guidance on how to improve in a specific area. Formative assessments will not be used in the final quarterly grade.
Summative Assessments
Summative assessments summarize the development of learners at a particular time. In accordance with the Arlington Community Schools grading policy, there will be a minimum of twelve summative assessments in the language arts classroom. These assessments will fall into one of the following categories: tests, writing, and quizzes.
Tests/ 40%
All tests will be announced ahead of time. Culminating activities that cover a number of skills may be assigned in the form of a project at the discretion of the language arts teacher.
Writing/ 35%
Students will have daily writing assignments. Students will have opportunities to write with both a formal and creative focus.
Quizzes/ Vocabulary/25%
Quizzes are considered assessments over a limited number of skills within one unit of study. Students will have many opportunities to practice skills in class before a taking a quiz.
Make-up Work and Late Work
Students should attend school daily. In the event of an absence, students will be expected to provide an absence note within two days of the absence. Students will be expected to make up all missed work.

Your child’s progress is important. We communicate with you in the following ways: graded summative assessments in PowerSchool, interims each nine weeks, and scheduled parent conferences.
